After a strong return to the All Ireland Formula Ford Championship in Mondello Park three weeks ago, Jennifer Mullan moved to Kirkistown last weekend for rounds seven and eight of the series. Also a counting round of the Northern Ireland Formula Ford Championship, Mullan was keen to continue her new found strong pace to strengthen her place in both championships.

Friday testing provided the ideal opportunity for the goldenpages.ie supported driver to prepare for the weekend ahead, as the day contained a mix of dry and wet sessions on track.

However Saturday morning’s qualifying would remain dry and Mullan charged into the session immediately posting the fastest pre-87 class time ahead of nearest challenger and Kirkistown local, Henry Campbell. As the session progressed, Jennifer extended that advantage to secure a class leading start for both of the day’s races.

Mullan’s wet weather running from Friday was about to become crucial. Just as the cars proceeded out to the track for race one, the heavens opened and doused the track with rain. Despite this, Mullan rocketed her SayHi WiFi backed Reynard off the line, muscling her way past Formula Ford veterans David Nicholl and Mike Todd coming into Ireland’s fastest corner, Debtors. Charging ahead, Mullan managed to find a good rhythm over the next sequence of laps now running in eighth position. However the wet conditions would catch the Newcastle native out coming into Colonial, as she spun her car on entry. Luckily pointing in the right direction, Jennifer quickly fired her car and managed to recover to just stay in front of Nicholl and class-rival Campbell as she rejoined the track. Mullan was now thrown into an epic battle for position with Campbell for the class lead, with Nicholl also in the mix for overall positioning. On the penultimate lap, Henry managed to slip past into the hairpin, but a determined Mullan wasn’t finished yet. Locked onto his gearbox, Jennifer prepared herself for a last of the late brakers move around the outside at the hairpin coupled with a superb exit to retake the lead in a drag race to the line to secure class victory in race one.

Again starting along side class rival Henry Campbell in race two, this provided Jennifer with a dry race and conditions she is typically more confident with. Another good start projected Jennifer ahead of Campbell into the first corner and the start of a race long battle for position between the Reynard drivers. With both having strong pace at different parts of the circuit, Mullan was able to remain ahead despite a number of challenges. With two laps to go, the race was abruptly ended with a red flag due to another car off the track which handed Jennifer her second class victory of the day and with it securing second overall in the Northern Ireland Formula Ford Pre-87 Championship.
